Cozumel Carnival (pronounced Carnaval in Spanish) is
one of the islands main events. It happens at the peak of high season when
the weather is at its finest. Festivities attract thousands of people from
all corners of the world. Carnival is generally a 7 day celebration. It
starts the week before Fat Tuesday, or Mardi-Gras. Dates change every year.
We are once again experiencing Carnival 2009 with with our new streets,
pedestrian walkways, downtown landscaping, and improvements all over the
island! As with every year I took these photos of Carnival 2009 tonight
(Monday) and tomorrow is Fat Tuesday and once again Carnival will end.
The new park in front of the Palacio with a new stage set for shows has been
a big hit and will captivate anyone that has not been here since last year.
Cozumel has never looked better! If you missed it this year you can always
plan to visit during 2010!!
I'll put together a slide show and post it here before too long.
The origins of Carnival are unclear, but most agree
that it started as a pagan celebration in ancient Rome, or Greece. Balls
were imported from Italy in the late nineteenth century, and had their
golden era in the thirties, with legendary balls at the Copacabana Palace,
and the Municipal Theater in Rio de Jinero.
There's much more to this extravaganza than the Parades. Street dancers
randomly roam through town. It's loads of fun, free, and it happens all over
the island. You are more than welcome to watch and participate. Besides the
fun of a great Parade, there is live music, food, drinks and every manner of
distraction in the town square. With so many people gathered together to
have a great time how can you go wrong?!
This years grand event was really more about the young people of our
paradise island. Every year is different. It was refreshing to see the young
new participants that will carry on the tradition as years go by.
You gotta have balls if you think this is not enough! Hey, don't get me
wrong... We are talking about the fabulous balls and events leading up to
the choosing of the King and Queen of Carnival. :0) If you have never been
to the island during this very special time; you are really missing out on a
great cultural experience. The "pre" carnival events happen at the
Convention center, clubs and other venues in and around San Miguel! Pick out
the right parties, and have a ball! Of course this is an adults only
activity.
It's never too early to start planning to be here in person next year. 2010
should be better then ever. Casa
Colonial has just been rated the number 1 specialty lodging in Cozumel
by Trip Advisor and I can think of no better place to spend this festive
time then in a festive location, Casa Colonial is normally sold out many
months in advance so you have to book early to assure a spot.
We hope that you will make one of recommended villas your headquarters in
the future! And even if you don't, we hope that you will be here next year
to enjoy it as much as we do!
For may years we have been capturing images of all the
festivities. These original photos of Carnival 2009 give you a pretty good
idea of what everything looks like. But the experience is MUCH better then
the photographs. The exciting sounds and rhythms of the night will make you
want to come back year after year!
All of the pictures on this page were taken on the Monday night before the
grand finale parade; Fat Tuesday. It is Street Carnival in all its glory,
filled with the most exotic characters you will ever see.

I will post the 2010 program here as soon as it is printed.
We hope that you are having a GREAT time; because we are!
Warm Regards from you know where!
