Cozumel Underwater Photography
Cozumel's underwater photography was brought into the spotlight by Jacques Cousteau. He was responsible for putting Cozumel on the map as a sea turtle sanctuary. Jacques also enjoyed SCUBA diving and photographing what is arguably the most pristine coral reef in the Western Hemisphere. It is no wonder that underwater shutter bugs travel from all over the world to photograph our majestic coral reefs and its inhabitants.
There is a vast array of equipment to choose from these days from the most expensive The Hasselblad H5D-50c-wi-fi (in an underwater housing) to the newest extreme sport sensation, the GoPro HERO4 Black Edition. And when it comes to underwater lighting the Ikelite 4061.1 Substrobe DS-161 TTL Underwater Flash really delivers.
Underwater digital photography is one of the favorite special interest of SCUBA divers coming to Cozumel on vacation. And underwater photographers are an elite (but not elitist) group of people who are passionate about their craft. These enthusiasts come from all walks of life. It is not uncommon to be on a live aboard with a group comprised of electricians, High Court Judges, multi-national corporate CEO's, and ex-Hells Angels. It is amazing to see everyone talking as equals. The common denominator is swapping stories and tips about techniques and equipment. If you've ever considered getting into this great hobby we hope that this page will help to inspire you.
This is not about an adrenaline rush. Although there is an element of "the thrill of the hunt" that appeals to that instinctive rush. Underwater photography is not a mindless sport either. It requires a plan, strategy, objective, logistics and in some cases calibration of your equipment. Once you have laid out your plan and are ready to execute it, it's time to get into the "Zen" aspects of the sport.
Not everyone wants to be intense about taking pictures underwater. Most divers are just snapping away and want to have something to bring back and show the folks back home; especially their non-diver friends. Maybe this will be the one thing that will push them over the edge and show them what SCUBA diving is all about. After all, the sport is still about a relatively unexplored sphere of the planet.
As a beginner it may be easier to work with video (as with the GoPro units). You may already be used to land photography or you may not. It really doesn't matter. These days the equipment does most of the work. All you have to do is point and shoot. With some luck you may even capture a world class photo!
All of the pictures on this page were taken right here on Cozumel. It's easy to see why taking pictures underwater has such an allure.
Who knows, maybe the photos on this page might be just the nudge you need to take that first step.
